Supplier price or landed price, and how to pick it right

Restocio's “What your cost prices mean” setting decides whether it adds freight to your Shopify cost prices or leaves them alone. Get it backwards and every margin figure in the app is wrong in the same direction.

What this setting decides

Pick Supplier price when your cost is goods only and let Restocio add freight on top. Pick Landed price when your cost already includes freight and let Restocio add none. Pick the wrong one and freight gets added twice, or never added at all, and both mistakes are silent: nothing in the app flags them, because Restocio has no way to check what you typed against your actual invoices.

If you want to check whether your own Shopify cost field is missing freight before you touch this setting, the ten-minute version of that check is in how to check your COGS in ten minutes. What landed cost actually is and why Shopify's own cost field leaves it out by default is covered in what a unit actually costs you. Neither of those posts is repeated here. This page is only about the one dropdown that decides which way Restocio treats the number you already have.

Where to find it

Open Settings, then Freight & Margin, and look for a dropdown labelled “What your cost prices mean.” Three options sit under it: Supplier price (freight added on top), Landed price (freight included), and We don't track cost prices. Whichever one you choose, a line underneath repeats the same warning no matter which: pick the one that matches the numbers already in Shopify and stick to it, because changing it later changes every margin and landed figure in the app.

Supplier price or landed price

The two real options, side by side. The third option is not in this table because it turns cost tracking off rather than choosing between two ways of reading a cost.

Writes a cost back to Shopify?Yes, Restocio can update the cost per item field as it learns the real landed costNo, not until you switch

Most stores that fill in Shopify's cost field the way its own help text tells them to, the price paid to the manufacturer, want Supplier price. Landed price is for a store that already worked freight into its numbers before it ever touched Restocio and does not want that undone.

What happens if you pick the wrong one

Pick Supplier price when your number is already a landed price, and freight gets counted twice. Restocio estimates freight from the product's weight and adds that estimate on top of a number that already had freight inside it. Every margin looks worse than it really is, and the gap is largest on anything that ever travelled by air.

Go the other way and the error flips. Pick Landed price when your number is only the supplier's invoice price, and freight disappears from the calculation instead. Restocio adds nothing on top, because Landed price tells it there is nothing left to add. Margins look better than they are, landed cost is understated, and the order total Restocio shows you is short by whatever the freight would actually have cost.

Neither direction is the safer guess. One inflates your costs, the other hides part of them, and both feed straight into every margin, landed cost, order total and stock value figure the app shows anywhere.

There is one visible guardrail. Pick Landed price and SKU Manager shows a banner warning that a cost price saved there will not be written back to Shopify until you have entered supplier-only prices for that product and switched the setting, because writing a freight-inclusive number into a field Shopify treats as goods-only would recreate the same double count on Shopify's own side.

If you don't track cost prices at all

The third option is a real choice, not a placeholder, and Restocio asks you to confirm before it takes effect. Without cost prices, Restocio cannot show margins per transport method, landed cost, the value of your stock or what an order will cost. It can still tell you what to reorder and by when, because that side of the app runs on sales rate and lead time rather than cost. Pick this only if you genuinely have no cost data to give it, since most of the savings the app finds are money figures, and this switches all of them off.

Switching it later

Changing your mind is not a preview, and it does not reach into the past. Current figures, the dashboard's stock value, a margin preview, an order you have not placed yet, recalculate immediately, store-wide, for every SKU at once. A purchase order you already created keeps the line costs it was built with, and a stock-valuation or COGS report you already ran keeps its numbers too, because both read from records written at the time rather than from this setting. There is no per-product override and no way to switch only the live figures back. That is the honest limitation of this setting: cheap to change going forward, unable to touch anything already committed to a PO or a report, and a switch made to fix one product's live number moves every other product's live number along with it. Get it right once, from your actual invoices, rather than treating it as something to try both ways.

Common questions

How do I know if my Shopify cost price already includes freight?

Check the number against your supplier's invoice for that product. If the two match to the unit, the field only ever recorded what the manufacturer charged, so pick Supplier price. If your number sits noticeably above the invoice price because someone folded freight in when the product was first set up, pick Landed price instead.

Can I use Supplier price for some products and Landed price for others?

No. It is one setting for the whole store, not a per-product choice, because Restocio has to decide once whether to estimate and add freight or leave every number alone. If some of your products carry a freight-inclusive cost and others don't, sort that out in SKU Manager before you choose, rather than trying to average it out with the setting.

What happens if I pick "We don't track cost prices"?

Restocio stops showing margins per transport method, landed cost, the value of your stock and what an order will cost. It still tells you what to reorder and by when. It asks you to confirm before switching to this option, since most of the savings the app finds are money figures and this turns all of them off.

I think I picked the wrong option when I set up Restocio. What do I do?

Switch it in Settings, Freight & Margin. If you're moving from Landed price to Supplier price, get supplier-only cost prices (goods only, no freight) into SKU Manager first, because Restocio will not write a cost back to Shopify while your numbers are still landed prices. The switch itself takes effect immediately for current figures: margins, landed cost, stock value and any order you have not placed yet. It will not reach into a purchase order you already created or a stock-valuation report you already ran; those keep the numbers they were built with.

Does this setting change anything in Shopify itself?

Only with Supplier price selected. Restocio can then write the landed cost it calculates back into Shopify's own cost per item field, so your Shopify reports improve too. With Landed price selected it writes nothing back, because your existing number is already the landed figure and there's nothing accurate to add to it.
